07/22/09 - July "Big Gun" training - Always fun getting out the big squirt guns. Back in July the department went to a training location in the Township, discovered the hydrant we needed would not produce enough flow to train on these large appliances, so then moved to a second location and set up the blitzfire and portable master stream device to train on. Training went extremely well, right up to the end when the skies opened in a torrential downpour, soaking all of us... part of the job.
10/03/09 - Fall Festival at Willow Mill - Another great turnout for the Fall Festival organized by Silver Spring Township. If you have not been to this event, it is a must-add for next year's calendar. Local vendors and an intimate setting, yet lots to see and do, make this festival a bigger winner every year. Our smokehouse was on hand to demonstrate to kids what a fire looks like. Even the Red Robin turns out for this event, and who could overlook the prettiest dairy queen this side of the ole' oak tree...
09/30/09 - Chimney Fire Training - Crews utilize this unique roof structure to challenge their chimney fire skills. With cold weather approaching, we thought it wise to brush up on a frequent winter call for us in chimney fires. I strongly urge residents to have their chimney cleaned before the heating season. Ironically, a few days before this training, a small chimney fire was controlled by the fire department a few doors down from this residence.
05/20/09 - Interstate 81 crash - One of our members managed to find these photos of an incident on Interstate 81 back in May 2009. Traffic was snarled at this rollover incident. Please be patient with first responders when the roadway is closed, it could be your loved one we are rescuing tomorrow.
09/27/09 - 2nd Alarm Assignment! - Rescue 31 is called on a second alarm to assist units at this fire in Mechanicsburg borough. Crews were hampered by old construction, years of renovation and constant danger of collapse. At the end of a hard fight, we gained the upper hand near sunrise, and no one was injured.
09/10/09 - Vehicle Crash - Late evening traffic was slowed as this three car incident unfolds on the Carlisle Pike in front of Olive Garden. The red vehicle suffered substantial damage, and while the occupants had injuries suspected to be minor, they required some cutting for extrication. Olive Garden, a continued supporter of our fire company, actually brought out a waitress and a tray of water for the firefighters! Cheers to Olive Garden, jeers to the driver not paying attention.
09/10/09 - Overturned Tractor Trailer - A tractor trailer full of bottled water and a luxury SUV compete for the same space on southbound I-81. Amazingly, the SUV wins, taking less damage than the tractor that overturned, spilling its cargo in the median. Removal of the door on the BMW was necessary to extricate the passenger. These occupants are extremely lucky to escape with minor injuries. Note side-curtain airbag deployment.
09/10/09 - Vehicle Crash - This crash took place on I-81northbound. An incredible impact, tractor trailer to tractor trailer, however no one was injured. Traffic was delayed while the heavy wreckers removed the damaged tractor piece by piece.
08/15/09 - Tree on Vehicle - A large tree falls directly onto this unlucky patron's car. Fortunately, the vehicle was not occupied and no one was hurt. The fire department removed the tree from the vehicle.
08/18/09 - Vehicle Fire - This late night vehicle fire quickly communicated to the vehicle in front of it, and could have easily been on its way to the house if not for the intervention of responding units, who were able to get the two vehicles under control.

After hurried searches by first responding units, it was discovered the owner and family were at a restaurant eating. The fire was contained to one room but smoke and water damage affected several parts of the house.
08/10/09 - Vehicle Overturned - High speed and low age, once again a recipe for disaster. This lucky young patron was transported with minor injuries. Some minor tooling was required to remove the driver. Lieutenant 31 inspects the vehicle after extrication.
06/08/09 - Truck fire with burn victim - Mid-afternoon call to Interstate 81 for a box truck on fire with a victim. Chief 131 reports a column upon leaving the station. A light crew on Engine 31 gets a knock on it as Company 33 arrives to provide much needed water and backup. Driver stated the vehicle caught fire while driving, and had obvious burn injuries to the lower extremities. Somewhere along the incident, the vehicle was free rolling down the interstate, with no driver, on fire.
06/06/09 - Dryer Fire - Call for a fire in a dryer at a private residence brings the full box. Crews quickly extinguished what could have been a major incident.
05/26/09 - Route 11 crash - Minor incident on Route 11 when a tractor trailer and minivan come together near Shaffer Trucking in New Kingstown. Of course, the saddle tank is compromised and leaking diesel fuel as the rain sets in to complicate things. Rescue 31 and crew assisted Company 33 in dyking and damming until private cleanup crews arrived.
05/16/09 - Interstate 81 Crash - Crews pop a door to extricate a confined patient on I-81. Placement of the rescue was a little tight, but workspace on the Interstate can be very constricted. Helmet on roof of car...must be an EMT there somewhere.
05/11/09-York Circle - Crash with confinement - EMS crews affect a safe extrication prior to fire department arrival for this single vehicle overturned with one patient. Note the piston laying in the roadway. It takes quite a hit to knock a piston out of a truck. Good use of Rut Struts to stabilize the vehicle.
05/10/09 - Millers Gap and Sample Bridge Road - Single vehicle accident with no injuries, crews assisted in restoring the displaced rock wall and containing a fluid leak. Nice car.
04/29/09 - Sportsman's Road Fire - Responding to a 1 am report of a mobile home fire, most firefighters told of the glow along the mountain before they arrived on scene. No surprise, arriving units find a well involved modular on a foundation over a basement. Not much we could do, the first floor was too compromised on arrival to commit any firefighters onto. Crews showed good restraint in staying safe. Oh, and who do we thank for that unbelievable truck placement from 30? Was it Chief 231's advanced planning or Nelson's expert wheeling? One attaboy to Truck 30 from Hampden Township, and another for turning the Truck around down there and getting it out!
04/24/09 - Head on auto crash, Carlisle Pike - Responding units formulate their plan for extrication of a patient after a head-on collision causes minor injuries. Medical condition of a driver was considered to be a factor in this minor crash.

03/19/09 - Automatic Fire Alarm-Or is it? - Residential fire alarm comes in and the keyholder arrives just behind responding units. They quickly gain access to find this evening's roast completely out of water and putting off a good amount of smoke. A few more minutes would have meant sure fire damage. We assisted the homeowner in venting the house and all agreed that unattended cooking is a bad idea.
03/18/09 - Second alarm assignment, house fire - Tanker 31 assisted North Middleton Twp at the scene of a house fire. First arriving attack crews did an incredible job of protecting the nearby exposures, and used CAFS for a highly effective knockdown. Tanker 31 delivered 2500 gallons to Tanker 34, and was released. The truck pics are shown at no fault to Truck 39, just no way to deploy in that maze of wires! Have a backup plan!
03/12/09 - Woods Drive for overturned vehicle - Bylaw meeting was cut short by first a transformer explosion, then shortly after for the overturned vehicle that hit the transformer. Arriving crews found live wires down, a large transformer fire, an overturned vehicle and an unknown number of patients in the vehicle below. Took a few minutes to sort it out, but crews coordinated well and the incident was brought to a close with one patient signing off. Pictures were taken afterward at towing yard.
03/10/09 - Working car fire impinging on power lines - Engines 31 and 133, Tanker 33 respond to a working car fire, Chief 231 reports heavy smoke from way out 114. Chief 231 makes a quick knockdown while Chief 131 and FF McDonald get packed up and complete extinguishment.
02/25/09 - Bent Creek Blvd - Commercial Structure Fire - Fellow firemen, do NOT get lulled to sleep! This 0400hrs AFA got tense quick when first arriving units discovered smoke charging the foyer. The box was dropped, and we gained entry to discover a small fire started by a dehumidifier, contained by the sprinkler system. Extensive water damage throughout first floor and basement from sprinklers, but it sure beats fire loss. Ben poses with his attack partner from New Kingstown, good team work. Ryan looks pleased he finally wedged those sprinklers. Hey Chief 131, is that electrical cord, in that puddle of water, actually electrified? Duh...
02/20/09 - Vehicle Overturned-Interstate 81 - Single vehicle left the roadway, destroyed a large section of guardrail and flipped over off the highway. No extrication necessary, but crews had to cut guardrail to secure the vehicle.

02/06/09 - Vehicle into a tree - Bali Hai Road. It never ceases to amaze me that people walk away with no injuries after such substantial steering wheel displacement. That has to hurt. This was initially dispatched as a Hampden box, but ended up being in Silver Spring. Chief 31 wisely decided to let them continue to handle. Thanks for covering, guys, owe you one.
01/14/09 - Misc. Pics - End of the year house cleaning leaves a few random pics of recent incidents.
